CHAPTER 6
âJägermonsters are hard to kill, because the devil donât want them in Hell.â
âPeasant saying
âIâm the what?â
âYouâre the Baronâs beautiful daughter, surely.â
âI am not the Baronâs daughter.â
The hanging man looked nonplused for a moment. His brow furrowed around the visor that hid his eyes. âAre you sure? Iâm usually very good at spotting the offspring of evil geniusesâ¦â Then his face cleared. âAh! Then you must be the plucky lab assistant here to set me free!â
Agatha began to feel like she was on stage and didnât know her lines. âIâm sorry, who are you?â
The man grinned and, astonishingly, managed to make himself look imposing, even restrained as he was. âAh, allow me to introduce myself. I am Othar TryggvassenâGentleman Adventurer!â He smiled modestly. âPerhaps youâve heard of me. Iâm told the stories are getting around.â
Agatha felt her feeling of unreality increase. âOthar. The Othar. The man who defeated the wooden warriors of Dr. Krause.â
âThat would be me, yes.â
âThe hero who saved the hamlet of Lunkhauser from the ever-widening moat.â
âThe very same.â
âThe savior of the town of Mount Horeb from the rain of mustard.â
Otharâs grin slid off his face. He chewed his lip. âI⦠uh⦠Iâm afraid you have me on that one.â
Agatha nodded approvingly. âI made it up.â She peered down the shaft below. Much to her surprise, the bottom was quite visible, as were the gigantic gears that would swiftly grind anything that fell into them into a fine lubricating paste. She looked back at the again grinning Othar. âYou donât seem too worried aboutâ¦â She gestured downwards.
âAbout being a prisoner in a seemingly hopeless predicament? Well Iâd be lying if I said it wasnât inconvenient, but Iâll escape eventually. I am the hero, after all, and you are just what I need!â
âAn audience?â
âYeâno! You can be my spunky girl sidekick. Iâm fresh out at the moment. Release me and weâll blow up the Baronâs Dirigible of Doom, escape by the skin of our teeth, and then itâs cocoa and schnapps all around!â
Agatha folded her arms. ââSpunky girl sidekick.ââ
âSure! Itâll be fun!â
Agatha nodded and began to resume her edging around the pit towards the far door. âLook, no offense,â she said, âbut Iâve been around Sparks and their labs most of my life.â
Otharâs grin faltered. âOh?â
âUh-huh, and Iâd rather not end up being the Easily Duped Minion Who Sets the Insanely Dangerous Experiment free. Or the Hostage Who Ensures the Smooth-Talking Villainâs escape.â
âAhâ¦â
âI donât have any proof that you really are Othar Tryggvassen, or even that youâre really human.â
âErâ¦â
Agatha reached the far side and dusted herself off. âThis Girl Sidekick job doesnât call for a lot of smarts, does it?â
The hanging man had the grace to look embarrassed. âUm⦠Not as such, no, but no matter who or what I am, is it right to leave a fellow sentient strung up like this?â
Agatha considered this. âThat depends on the nature of the experiment.â
Othar frowned. âI think you spent a little too much time in those labs.â
Agatha looked surprised. âReally? Why?â
The door behind her slammed open.
